About Piru

Piru is a small community in northeast Ventura County just 15 minutes west of Interstate 5 and Santa Clarita. It began as a farming town in the late 1800’s that served as a citrus stop for the Southern Pacific Railroad. Paralleling El Camino Real (now known as Highway 126), the rail line was built from east to west – Los Angeles to Ventura. The town of Piru was laid out in 1888 by David C. Cook, a publisher of religious books from Illinois who had moved west for his health. Cooked planned to create a “Second Garden of Eden” and planted over 900 acres of oranges, apricots, walnuts, olives and other fruit and nut trees.

Lake Piru is located in the Los Padres National Forest next to the Sespe Condor Sanctuary, only a few minutes drive from the community. The Lake is popular for sailing, kayaking, canoeing, swimming, water skiing, and fishing. Its marina provides fishing and pontoon boat rentals, as well as dry storage. Picnic tables, camping grounds, launching ramp, mooring, a store and a snack bar are also present.

“Heritage Valley” (LA- Ventura county line to Ventura City limits) is PART of the Santa Clara River Valley and includes the communities of Santa Paula, Fillmore, and Piru. The designation, Heritage Valley, was chosen when representatives of tourism related organizations and businesses throughout that geographical area, about 20 years ago, joined together under Ventura County leadership to promote tourism under the name Heritage Valley Tourism Bureau.
